Austin Outdoor Studio is now Steel House MFG. The name change was to better identify with the work we currently are doing. We have also moved our little shop into it’s permanent home at 4310 Willow Springs. This new building is 15,300 sqr feet and is allowing us to expand into new markets and services. Not only will this new building allow us to better service our clients, it gave us more office space, 3 times the work area, and has allow us the space to get some new equipment. We recently acquired a 165 ton, 13′ press brake and a 13′x 1/4″ metal shear. We should have these up and running in by the end of July.

Floating Single Stringer Staircase Under Construction

Austin Outdoor Studio (AOS) is in the process of finishing up another custom steel staircase. This monorail differs from most as the owner wanted crisp tight corners and didn’t want to see the typical large radius of tubing used on most monorails. They also wanted it have a conformal look by having the risers and treads fabricated out of 1/4″ plate. We were able to design all the weld joints of the staircase so they were either hidden under wooden treads or concealed by the cladding. This allowed for minimal grinding after installation and will ensure a tight clean look.

The stairs will eventually having a glass railing and will be treated with 1.5″ thick wood treads and landing. The staircase will also be painted white. We will definitely posts some final pictures when this ones done. Keep checking back.

A Staircase Masterpiece

We teamed up with Pilgrim Building Company and A Parallel Architecture on this staircase. We’ve been waiting a while to get the finished pictures up of this staircase. This conformal staircase is built from 5/8″ plate steel. We fabricated the staircase offsite and then some how managed to get this beast installed in the house. Surprisingly, once installed this staircase looks amazingly light and perfectly delicate.

We just finished up the design of our new fire pits and they are perfect mix of rustic and modern. We have both a 36″ and 30″ models and both are about 12″ tall. W Hotel and Austin Outdoor Studio

Earlier this year AOS was contacted to bid some work at the “W”. At the time, we had no idea how much work we would end up doing and how much our work would contribute to the overall look and feel of the entire first floor lobby of the hotel. The hotel is filled with blackened steel that works incredibly well with all the walnut wood, plaster walls and concrete floors. I included a few pictures of the project, but look for a full write up and section dedicated to the W Hotel on our website soon. Here’s a list of the work we completed over the last few months:

Steel Entry Niches at the front door,
Blackened Steel stair treads, landings, railings and solid 7/8″ thick stair railing look outs.
Over 1100′ of steel baseboards in the hotel.
The steel floor plates, wall caps and door jambs
The tequila bar footrest, bar countertop, and lighted bottle rack
The 18′ tall fireplace and steel foor in the Fireplace Room
The pair of 11′x3.5′ steel pivot doors that lead into the “Secret Bar”
The AV Cabinet in the Secret Bar, housing all the vintage sound equipment, measures 10’6″ tall x 6′ wide
Foot rails in the secret bar, tube structure supporting the mirrored wall, and the 16′ wide steel niche behind the bar
The double sided steel fireplace in the living room/ porch room.
Condo Desk at the the Condo Entry
Recessed Counters and small cabinets behind the front desk
There are 9 unisex bathrooms on the first floor. We built custom steel vanities, and grab bars.

Upstairs in the pool area, we fabricated the steel work around the bar including:

1/2″ plate wall cap aproximately 60′ in length
1/2″ plate awning over the bar opening
tubing foot rail
half door
light steel niche at the back of the bar
various wall caps

We still have a few projects that are left, but for the most part we have finished the majority of the work. This job was a huge challenge and our small shop staffed up to 11 employees to get this done. Gates by Austin Outdoor Studio

One of these days Austin Outdoor Studio might get the opportunity to build a simple picket gate, but to date we still haven’t had the chance. Maybe we just love the idea of pulling off one of a kind gates. Here’s what we worked on this spring. The first pair of gates is for an excellent customer of ours. We had the luxury of doing their steel landscaping on the front part of their property last spring . The property was recently featured on the Lady Bird Johnson “Garden’s on Tour” . Here’s a link to an Austin Blogger who did a feature on the property. I am sure you’ll enjoy seeing the property.

The second is a pair of gates we build for a local Austin couple who wanted something unique to access their backyard. We designed and built this pair of gates. The gates are painted steel and ipe. They utilize our custom stainless self latching hardware. They turned out great.
